"I thought we were friends until..."

I know many, if not all of you, who are reading this now have either had someone say this to you...or you've probably said this to someone. I, for certain, have had a few people say it to me in the past and might I add the fact that their reasons statements were somewhat random. I won't expose anybody here.
So what exactly is this thing called "FRIENDSHIP'? In a society where sites like Facebook & Twitter have taken over the role of pledging the allegiance of friendship on people's behalf, I don't think there is a real answer to that question.  Let me not even go into the Blackberry messenger chapter... oh lawd!  Anyway, it seems there is now a blur between friends and associates and some people just don't know where to draw the line. I was amazed when i came across a mutual friend's Facebook page (YES! I was stalking...) and noticed this person had 1,988 friends. Sheesh! How many of those "friends" are acknowledged? With my eight hundred -and something friends (which is decreasing on a regular basis), I find it hard to keep up with people.
SO back to the topic at hand, what makes you and another individual FRIENDS? Personally, I think it goes beyond knowing what i do for a living and how many siblings I have. It takes trust, openness, shared experiences, interest, communication....and much more. These are some of the things I share with those whom I refer to as friends. Does this mean they all gain the same amount of trust from me-------> No! People who know me or at least knew me at a point in time, tend to assume I have A LOT of friends. * Error* I don't. I just happen to be in contact with a good amount of people for some reason or the other. Half of those people don't give two flying saucers if I get hit by a car tomorrow.....ok maybe I'm being extreme, but you get my drift anyway!
I've "lost" a couple of friends over the past few years - more due to circumstances than any other thing. For those who let a man come between them--- hmm personally, I don't think you guys were really friends. Think about it. Please feel free to disagree with me. I'm open to other people's opinions.
One thing life has taught me is that IT GOES ON!  I think my FRIENDS know themselves and I don't need to define what is between us. And yes, there are levels. Lol! just keeping it real.

So please, understand that being Facebook friends or BBM'ing/ Tweeting regularly does not necessarily mean you guys are real friends....NOT always. Know where you stand and next time someone tries to put you in a guilt trap by starting their sentence with "I thought we were friends...." Tell them THANK YOU and move on.

Cheers to my real friends...I'd love to give shout outs but I do not want to cause trouble. Lol! They know themselves and I'm sure with time, they will be mentioned here. :-)

Leaving y'all with this song which I LOVE so much.
